Online exercise gear retailers report record high sales at the beginning of 2026, but waistlines across America will likely not see a corresponding dip in size.
Businesses fulfilling these orders say the vast majority of customers are admitting they will never use their purchases, requesting their machines and running shoes be delivered directly to the city dumps where they are bound to eventually go anyway. In addition, most buyers also purchase cheese doodles and other snacks, and those are typically shipped to actual residences.
Although sellers are happy with their numbers regardless of outcome, landfill employees have complained about the sudden added workload.
“Usually, the equipment trickles in over the course of a few months after the new year,” notes one harried dump worker, whose muscles ripple as he throws a treadmill onto a pile of barbells and medicine balls. “But we are getting a really intense workout this week.”
