Just in time for residents to return whatever they were hoping to wear, New York City’s Lawful and Appropriate Merriment Ensemble (LAME) Committee has issued a guide for residents hoping to enjoy Halloween in a state-sanctioned outfit. Mayor Bill de Blasio recently decided to enact a $100 billion fine for offensive Halloween attire, but until now, residents had no rubric to help them judge what that entailed.
And despite the overblown annoyance of naysayers, the suggestions allow for a fair amount of imagination.
“We still want everybody to have a fun Halloween,” emphasized Jenny Buzzkill, the committee’s chairperson. “Nobody is trying to stifle your creativity; we just want to make sure that creativity is within strict legal boundaries.”
She reminded everyone that decorum does forbid privileged residents from appropriating any other culture, race, religion, hair color, body shape, hobby enjoyment, or musical interest than their own. But she reassured Halloween revelers that they could still pretend to be somebody else, “so long as it’s nearly identical to who they already are.”
Buzzkill went on to give some examples, suggesting, “If you are a suburban white woman of any name, feel free to dress up as a suburban white woman named Becky.”
She continued that a white woman might even go dressed as a “Karen,” but cautioned, “That would of course only be appropriate if you already wear the accepted Karen haircut and have asked to see anybody’s manager in the past month. Let’s not go too far here.”
