After struggling for years to find his niche, actor Adam Schiff seems to have found the role that has long eluded him. His performance as the weasily antagonist in the first installment of the miniseries Impeachment Proceedings: a Farce has won rave reviews and is now generating talk of an Emmy nomination.
Starring as the smug impeachment manager in a dog and pony show trial, Schiff gives the kind of comedic performance that hasn’t been seen since Mike Myers brought his Dr. Evil character to the screen. Schiff makes his alter ego equal parts arrogant and insecure, smooth and awkward, intellectual and clueless. He is the character you love to hate, but hate just a little too much to love.
And audiences are eating it up.
After just the first installment, viewers have already called his performance “humorously cringe-worthy,” and “deliciously uncomfortable.” Schiff himself seems to be cautiously optimistic of his award chances this year, but sources say he is aware that virtually any of his co-stars, most of whom play similarly slimy political villains, could walk away with the prize.
